EXTRA Storsvingen in Hammerfest, Norway, recently invested in a TOMRA R1 reverse vending machine to improve efficiency and provide the best recycling experience for its customers.  Hammerfest, home to over 10,000 people, now hosts the world’s northernmost TOMRA R1.

Recycling made easy

The TOMRA R1 multi-feed reverse vending machine makes recycling easier, and is now available in the North of Norway. According to Kristoffer Hansen, store manager at EXTRA Storsvingen, "the best thing about the TOMRA R1 is how easy it is to recycle with it. You open the lid, pour in the bottles, close the lid, take the receipt, and you're done."

Over 100 beverage containers can be recycled in just seconds thanks to TOMRA Flow Technology, allowing bottles and cans to be scanned and registered with 360-degree instant recognition. The multi-feed approach makes recycling up to five times faster than single-feed solutions. What’s more is that recyclers no longer need to get their hands dirty by inserting bottles one by one. As a result, recycling is not just easier but also faster and cleaner with the TOMRA R1.

Improved efficiency

Not only has the TOMRA R1 reverse vending machine enhanced the recycling experience for customers, but it has also benefited store employees. According to Pia, a staff member at EXTRA Storsvingen, "The new machine works fantastically. It is much easier for us employees to operate it and for customers it goes much faster when they recycle with it."

According to TOMRA’s 2023 consumer survey, 65% of Norwegian consumers prefer to use multi-feed rather than single-feed reverse vending machines. This is why EXTRA Storsvigen has seen many new customers since the installation of the TOMRA R1 and why, within just two and a half months since the installation of the TOMRA R1, the return volume at EXTRA Storsvingen has tripled, with almost 600,000 containers returned.

Keeping the environment sustainable

Recycling plays a critical role in maintaining a sustainable environment and reducing waste. It is especially important in Hammerfest, known for its spectacular scenery, where people love to go hiking and spend time outdoors. As Konrad put it, "it's important to recycle around here because we have such beautiful nature, and we want to keep it like that – sustainable and lasting for generations." Therefore, the TOMRA R1 not only enhances efficiency and provides a better recycling experience for customers, but also helps keep the streets of Hammerfest free of waste.
